Secure Your Crypto with Trezor Bridge
The essential background application that facilitates secure communication between your Trezor hardware wallet and your web browser.

What is Trezor Bridge?
Trezor Bridge is a lightweight application designed to run in the background of your computer. Its primary function is to facilitate communication between your Trezor hardware wallet and supported web browsers. Without this bridge, your browser cannot directly detect or interact with the USB device due to modern browser security protocols.
Originally, this functionality was handled by browser extensions. However, as browser technologies evolved (specifically with the deprecation of NPAPI), a standalone solution became necessary. Trezor Bridge was developed to fill this gap, offering a more stable, secure, and browser-independent method of connection.
It acts as a local server (running on 127.0.0.1) that listens for communication requests from authorized domains (like Trezor Suite web) and relays them to the hardware device connected via USB. This ensures that your private keys never leave the device, while still allowing you to interact with web-based interfaces.
Secure Protocol
Uses encrypted communication channels to prevent man-in-the-middle attacks.
Cross-Browser
Works seamlessly with Chrome, Firefox, Brave, and other major browsers.
Background Service
Runs silently in the background without requiring user intervention.
Hardware Optimized
Specifically tuned for Trezor Model One and Trezor Model T devices.
How Trezor Bridge Works
Understanding the technical communication layer
USB Connection
When you plug in your Trezor device, the operating system recognizes it as a USB HID (Human Interface Device). Trezor Bridge constantly monitors USB ports for this specific device signature.
Local Server
The Bridge creates a local HTTP server on your machine (typically on port 21325). This server is only accessible from your local computer, ensuring external actors cannot access it.
Browser Request
When you visit a compatible service like Trezor Suite Web, the website sends a request to the local Bridge server asking for device status.
Secure Handshake
Trezor Bridge verifies the request and establishes a communication tunnel. It translates the web requests into USB commands that the hardware wallet understands.
Installation & Setup Guide
Getting started is simple and takes less than 2 minutes
- Download the Installer
Visit the official Trezor website or wallet interface. The site will automatically detect your operating system and suggest the correct version of Trezor Bridge.
- Run the Executable
Locate the downloaded file (usually
trezor-bridge-2.x.x.exe) and double-click to launch the installation wizard. - Confirm Security Prompts
Windows UAC or macOS Gatekeeper may ask for permission to install. Verify the publisher is "SatoshiLabs" before proceeding.
- Complete Installation
Follow the on-screen prompts. Once finished, the Bridge process (
trezord) will start automatically in the background. - Clear Browser Cache (Optional)
If your browser doesn't immediately recognize the device, try refreshing the page or clearing your browser cache to reset the connection attempts.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
Device not detected?
Ensure you are using a data-capable USB cable. Some cables are for charging only. Try a different USB port directly on your computer, avoiding USB hubs if possible. Restarting the Trezor Bridge service via Task Manager can also resolve detection issues.
"Trezor Bridge is not running" error?
This usually means the background process trezord has stopped. Reinstalling the Bridge often fixes this. On Linux, ensure you have the correct udev rules installed for USB permission handling.
Is Trezor Bridge safe?
Yes. The code is open-source and auditable. It only facilitates data transport; it does not have access to your recovery seed or private keys. All sensitive operations (like signing a transaction) still require physical confirmation on the device itself.
Do I need Bridge for Trezor Suite App?
No. The desktop application version of Trezor Suite has the Bridge functionality built-in internally. You only need the standalone Trezor Bridge installation if you are using the web-based version of Trezor Suite or third-party web wallets like MetaMask.
